Area Lab

Free Year 4 maths practice — find the area of rectangles and rectilinear shapes by counting equal squares. No account needed.

About Area Lab

Count area in supplied rectangles and rectilinear shapes, plus total shaded area in a separate whole-and-half-square extension. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Measure area in square units by counting, grouping and subtracting equal squares.

Curriculum anchor: England Year 4 mathematics: find the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Have the learner mark counted rows or split an L-shape into rectangles so every square is counted once. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
