Dictionary Navigator

Free Year 3 dictionary practice — use alphabetic order, guide words and spelling checks. No account needed.

About Dictionary Navigator

Use alphabetic order and guide words to model locating entries, then recognise standard spellings among supplied choices. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Use alphabetic order and guide-word decisions to locate supplied words, and recognise standard spellings among supplied choices.

Curriculum anchor: England English programme of study: Years 3–4 dictionary use and spelling.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Repeat the locating tasks with a real child-friendly dictionary. Choosing a supplied spelling does not show that the learner can check it independently in a dictionary. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
