Sentence Complexity Lab

Free Year 4 English practice — identify simple, compound and complex sentences, clauses, conditionals and corrections. No account needed.

About Sentence Complexity Lab

Distinguish sentence structures, phrases and clauses; complete if-conditionals and correct supplied sentence errors. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Choose descriptions of supplied sentence and clause structures, complete conditional sentences and select bounded corrections. Independent composition and independently produced explanations are not assessed.

Curriculum anchor: England lower key stage 2 English: extend sentence range with more than one clause and a wider range of conjunctions.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Identify main and subordinate clauses in the supplied examples. Commands can have an unstated subject, and some clauses are non-finite. Do not use the presence of one word, such as so, as a guaranteed sentence-type rule. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
