Sound Travel Lab

Free Year 4 science practice — vibrations, sound travel, insulation, speed through materials and bottle pitch. No account needed.

About Sound Travel Lab

Trace sound from vibration through solids, liquids and gases, compare insulation tests, reason about broad speed patterns and predict blown-bottle pitch. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Choose explanations of sound travel and interpretations or predictions for specified insulation, speed and blown-bottle examples.

Curriculum anchor: England Year 4 science: identify how sounds are made, associate some with vibration, recognise vibrations travel through a medium to the ear, find pitch patterns and decreasing volume with distance.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Use moderate sound levels and supervised investigations; specify whether bottles are blown or struck because the pitch trend can differ. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.

Frequently asked questions

Does it need an account? No. The game runs in the browser and asks for no name, email address, school or location.

Is it timed? Practice is untimed. Where a sprint exists it is optional. Times Tables Sprint also includes MTC-style independent practice, not an expected-standard judgement.

Can it be used on a phone? Yes. Buttons support touch and keyboard use; sorting always has a tap alternative to dragging.
