Free Year 3 practice recognising inverted commas and punctuation for direct speech. No account needed.
Recognise selected correctly punctuated direct-speech sentences and distinguish direct from reported speech. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.
Learning objective: Recognise selected uses of inverted commas and sentence punctuation in direct speech.
Curriculum anchor: England English programme of study: Years 3–4 punctuation for direct speech.
This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.
Ask the learner to write a new line of dialogue after playing. The game uses double quotation marks and does not assess independent composition or every publishing style. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
Does it need an account? No. The game runs in the browser and asks for no name, email address, school or location.
Is it timed? Practice is untimed. Where a sprint exists it is optional. Times Tables Sprint also includes MTC-style independent practice, not an expected-standard judgement.
Can it be used on a phone? Yes. Buttons support touch and keyboard use; sorting always has a tap alternative to dragging.
