Free Year 4 English practice — recognise exception words, prefixes, suffixes and homophones in supplied contexts. No account needed.
Choose selected statutory Years 3–4 spellings, affixed forms and word endings, contextual homophones and other confusable forms, and word-specific spelling patterns. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.
Learning objective: Use spelling patterns and sentence meaning to choose accurate forms.
Curriculum anchor: England Years 3–4 spelling: prefixes and suffixes, homophones and other words that are often misspelt, plus the statutory word list.
This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.
After each choice, ask the learner to cover the word and spell it aloud or on paper from memory. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
Does it need an account? No. The game runs in the browser and asks for no name, email address, school or location.
Is it timed? Practice is untimed. Where a sprint exists it is optional. Times Tables Sprint also includes MTC-style independent practice, not an expected-standard judgement.
Can it be used on a phone? Yes. Buttons support touch and keyboard use; sorting always has a tap alternative to dragging.
