Year 4 Text Purpose Lab

Free Year 4 English practice — recognise explanation and newspaper purposes, features and accurate headlines. No account needed.

About Year 4 Text Purpose Lab

Recognise explanation, instruction, report and newspaper purposes; identify key features and choose accurate neutral headlines. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Choose text purposes, feature descriptions and accurate headlines from supplied short examples. Complete-text analysis, research and independent writing are not assessed.

Curriculum anchor: England lower key stage 2 English: read and discuss non-fiction structures and use organisational devices in non-narrative writing.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Ask the learner to point to the exact verb, connective or report detail that supports each choice, then plan a complete report away from the game. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
