Earth Rotation Lab

Free Year 5 Science practice — explain day, night, the Sun’s apparent path, time zones and seasons. No account needed.

About Earth Rotation Lab

Explain day and night and the Sun’s apparent path using a rotating-Earth model, with bounded time-zone and season contrasts. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Distinguish daily rotation from axial tilt during orbit and apply the model to supplied observations.

Curriculum anchor: England Year 5 Science: use Earth’s rotation to explain day/night and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Use a lamp and tilted globe: rotate for one day, then move the globe around the lamp while keeping its tilt direction fixed. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
