Year 5 Figurative Language Lab

Free Year 5 English practice — identify language devices, choose supported explanations, and recognise haiku features and kennings. No account needed.

About Year 5 Figurative Language Lab

Choose answers about language devices, their possible effects, selected haiku features and supplied kennings in short original examples. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Identify selected devices and choose interpretations supported by supplied words. Recognise selected haiku features and kennings; independent explanations and poem writing are not assessed.

Curriculum anchor: England upper KS2 reading: discuss and evaluate figurative language and consider its impact on the reader.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Ask which exact word creates the effect, then invite a different valid interpretation supported by the text. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
