Writing Effects Lab

Free Year 5 English practice — recognise sentence purposes and choose vocabulary and character details for a stated effect. No account needed.

About Writing Effects Lab

Recognise sentence purposes and choose precise vocabulary, actions and dialogue for a stated writing effect. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Choose supplied sentences, words and details that create a stated effect on meaning, character or atmosphere. Independent composition is not assessed.

Curriculum anchor: England upper KS2 writing: select appropriate grammar and vocabulary and describe settings, characters and atmosphere.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Ask the learner to draft one original sentence using the chosen technique after each round. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
