Active Reading Lab

Free Year 6 English practice — explore text traditions, read closely and ask useful questions. No account needed.

About Active Reading Lab

Recognise text traditions, read original short passages closely and choose useful questions. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Choose genre labels, text-supported interpretations and useful reading questions from supplied options.

Curriculum anchor: England upper KS2 English: read widely, identify themes and conventions, discuss understanding and ask questions to improve understanding.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Ask the learner to point to the exact words that support each answer. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.

Frequently asked questions

Is it timed? Practice is untimed. Where a sprint exists it is optional. Times Tables Sprint also includes MTC-style independent practice, not an expected-standard judgement.

Can it be used on a phone? Yes. Buttons support touch and keyboard use; sorting always has a tap alternative to dragging.
