Discussion Skills Lab

Free Year 6 English practice — choose helpful responses for group discussions. No account needed.

About Discussion Skills Lab

Choose supplied responses to prepare relevant contributions, build on ideas, challenge fairly and summarise viewpoints. This game does not assess live speaking, listening or participation. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Choose spoken-language moves that support collaborative discussion and debate.

Curriculum anchor: England spoken language: participate actively in collaborative conversations, articulate and justify answers, consider viewpoints and use discussion and debate.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

As an optional follow-up, invite the learner to try a response aloud or using their usual communication method, then discuss why it helps. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.

Frequently asked questions

Does it need an account? No. The game runs in the browser and asks for no name, email address, school or location.

Is it timed? Practice is untimed. Where a sprint exists it is optional. Times Tables Sprint also includes MTC-style independent practice, not an expected-standard judgement.

Can it be used on a phone? Yes. Buttons support touch and keyboard use; sorting always has a tap alternative to dragging.
