Free Year 6 English practice — recognise discussion, explanation and report conventions. No account needed.
Identify and compare conventions of discussions, explanations and non-chronological reports. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.
Learning objective: Connect a nonfiction text’s purpose to its organisation and language choices.
Curriculum anchor: England upper KS2 reading and writing: identify conventions across a wide range of nonfiction and use organisational and presentational devices.
This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.
Ask what the text is trying to do, then which feature helps it do that. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
Does it need an account? No. The game runs in the browser and asks for no name, email address, school or location.
Is it timed? Practice is untimed. Where a sprint exists it is optional. Times Tables Sprint also includes MTC-style independent practice, not an expected-standard judgement.
Can it be used on a phone? Yes. Buttons support touch and keyboard use; sorting always has a tap alternative to dragging.
