Purpose and Audience Lab

Free Year 6 English practice — match audience, purpose, structure and language to supplied writing situations. No account needed.

About Purpose and Audience Lab

Choose audience, purpose, structure and language for supplied writing situations. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Connect a stated audience and purpose to defensible planning and language choices.

Curriculum anchor: England upper KS2 writing: identify audience and purpose, select appropriate form, and assess vocabulary, grammar and structure choices.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Ask the learner to name the intended reader and goal before choosing an answer. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.

Frequently asked questions

Does it need an account? No. The game runs in the browser and asks for no name, email address, school or location.

Is it timed? Practice is untimed. Where a sprint exists it is optional. Times Tables Sprint also includes MTC-style independent practice, not an expected-standard judgement.

Can it be used on a phone? Yes. Buttons support touch and keyboard use; sorting always has a tap alternative to dragging.
