Atomic Formula and Mass Lab

Free Year 9 Science practice — atomic structure, formulae and mass conservation. No account needed.

About Atomic Formula and Mass Lab

Apply atomic structure, formula notation, compound naming and relative-formula-mass reasoning. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Use atomic and mass numbers, formula conventions and relative masses precisely while keeping system boundaries explicit.

Curriculum anchor: England KS3 Science: atomic structure, elements and compounds, chemical formulae and conservation of mass.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Ask the learner to distinguish proton number, mass number, subscript and coefficient before calculating. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.

Frequently asked questions

Does it need an account? No. The game runs in the browser and asks for no name, email address, school or location.

Is it timed? Practice is untimed. Where a sprint exists it is optional. Times Tables Sprint also includes MTC-style independent practice, not an expected-standard judgement.

Can it be used on a phone? Yes. Buttons support touch and keyboard use; sorting always has a tap alternative to dragging.
