Critical Reading Lab

Free Year 9 English practice — analyse purpose, context, comparison, meaning and evidence. No account needed.

About Critical Reading Lab

Analyse original short extracts for purpose, audience, context, comparison, connotation, inference and evidence. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Support interpretations with exact wording while separating justified inference from unsupported claims.

Curriculum anchor: England KS3 English: understand increasingly challenging texts; make inferences; refer to evidence; compare texts; analyse language and context.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Ask for the exact word or detail supporting the answer, then ask what stronger claim the evidence does not justify. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
