Energy and Fluids Lab

Free Year 9 Science practice — energy calculations, Sankey diagrams and upthrust. No account needed.

About Energy and Fluids Lab

Calculate kinetic and gravitational energy, interpret Sankey diagrams and explain upthrust from fluid pressure. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Apply equations with units, track conserved energy and use displaced-fluid reasoning without claiming practical competence.

Curriculum anchor: England KS3 Science: energy stores and transfers, work and machines, Sankey diagrams, pressure in liquids and upthrust.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Ask for the equation, units and force directions before accepting a numerical or floating explanation. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.

Frequently asked questions

Does it need an account? No. The game runs in the browser and asks for no name, email address, school or location.

Is it timed? Practice is untimed. Where a sprint exists it is optional. Times Tables Sprint also includes MTC-style independent practice, not an expected-standard judgement.

Can it be used on a phone? Yes. Buttons support touch and keyboard use; sorting always has a tap alternative to dragging.
