Apostrophe Workshop

Free apostrophe practice for Years 1–2 — write contractions, show singular possession and choose it's or its. No account needed.

About Apostrophe Workshop

Type supplied contractions, show stated singular ownership and distinguish apostrophe meanings. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Type supplied contractions, show stated singular ownership and distinguish apostrophe meanings.

Curriculum anchor: England English programme of study: selected Years 1–2 activities; partial support only.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Apostrophe Workshop provides guided Year 2 practice typing contractions from supplied expansions, placing apostrophes for stated singular owners, distinguishing contraction from possession in complete sentences, and choosing it’s or its in supplied contexts. It offers partial support for contracted forms and singular possession, with optional harder contraction practice following the Year 1 reading activity. It does not assess plural possession, every contraction or expansion, capitalisation, independent sentence composition, handwriting or complete apostrophe mastery. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
