Compound Builder

Free Year 2 compound-word practice — build, split and match compound words. No account needed.

About Compound Builder

Build and split supplied closed compounds and match their meanings. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Build and split supplied closed compounds and match their meanings.

Curriculum anchor: England English programme of study: selected Year 2 activities; partial support only.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Compound Builder provides guided Year 2 practice constructing and dividing selected closed compounds and recognising supplied compound vocabulary. It offers partial support for topic 2516’s compound-word activities. It does not assess independent spelling, independent sentence use, open or hyphenated compounds, every compound meaning, word-class identification, syllable recognition or complete topic mastery. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
