Main Idea Builder

Free Years 3–6 guided reading practice — find central ideas in short passages, choose support and order fixed events. No account needed.

About Main Idea Builder

Identify central ideas, select supporting details and order fixed events in short single-paragraph passages. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Identify central ideas, select supporting details and order fixed events in short single-paragraph passages.

Curriculum anchor: England english programme of study: selected Years 3–6 activities; partial support only.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Guided recognition of central ideas and selection of supporting information from short, shared single-paragraph passages, plus fixed event ordering; no independent written summarising, note making, discussion, synthesis across paragraphs, arbitrary-text or whole-topic claim. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
