Materials Lab

Free science game for Year 2 — explore changing shapes and choosing materials for a purpose. No account needed.

About Materials Lab

Explore changing solid-object shapes and choose materials using stated properties and test results. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Recognise squashing, bending, twisting and stretching, and relate observed properties to a purpose.

Curriculum anchor:

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Discuss what each example test shows and what it cannot tell us. These digital choices support reasoning; they do not replace safe handling of materials or carrying out an investigation. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.

Frequently asked questions

Does it need an account? No. The game runs in the browser and asks for no name, email address, school or location.

Is it timed? Practice is untimed. Where a sprint exists it is optional. Times Tables Sprint also includes MTC-style independent practice, not an expected-standard judgement.

Can it be used on a phone? Yes. Buttons support touch and keyboard use; sorting always has a tap alternative to dragging.
