Materials Sorter

Free everyday materials game for Year 1 — wood, metal, glass and plastic, objects and their materials, see-through and bendy, matched to the national curriculum. No account needed.

About Materials Sorter

Sort everyday objects and materials by name, type and simple physical properties across four Year 1 science rounds. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Identify and name everyday materials, distinguish objects from materials, and compare simple physical properties.

Curriculum anchor: England science programme of study: Year 1 everyday materials — identify, name, describe and compare materials.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Ask which observable property proves each choice, then find another object nearby made from the same material. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
