Sentence Sense

Free sentence game for Year 1 — capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, and adding -s or -es to make more than one. Matched to the national curriculum. No account needed.

About Sentence Sense

Practise capital letters, sentence-ending punctuation and regular plurals with one defensible answer per question. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Recognise where capital letters and sentence-ending marks are needed and form regular plurals with -s or -es.

Curriculum anchor: England English programme of study: Year 1 transcription, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Ask why the chosen capital, punctuation mark or plural ending is required before moving to the next question. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
