Shape Sorter

Free 2D and 3D shapes game for Years 1 to 2 — sort circles, triangles, cubes and pyramids, then sort them by their properties, matched to the national curriculum. No account needed.

About Shape Sorter

Sort illustrated common shapes as 2D or 3D, then compare straight and curved sides, faces and curved surfaces. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Recognise common 2D and 3D shapes and compare their sides, faces and curved surfaces.

Curriculum anchor: England mathematics programmes of study: geometry and properties of shapes in Years 1 and 2.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Find a matching object nearby and ask which sides, faces or curved surfaces prove the classification. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.

Frequently asked questions

Does it need an account? No. The game runs in the browser and asks for no name, email address, school or location.

Is it timed? Practice is untimed. Where a sprint exists it is optional. Times Tables Sprint also includes MTC-style independent practice, not an expected-standard judgement.
