Word Reader

Free Year 1 English practice — read selected common-exception words through meaning and sentence context. No account needed.

About Word Reader

Use supplied clues, sentence context and meanings to practise 32 selected Year 1 common-exception words. The default practice mode is untimed, so the learner can think before choosing. Correct answers build a gentle celebration; mistakes receive corrective feedback and return later rather than causing a penalty spiral.

Curriculum purpose

Learning objective: Use supplied clues, sentence context and meanings to practise 32 selected Year 1 common-exception words.

Curriculum anchor: England english programme of study: selected Year 1 activities; partial support only.

This game is designed as short independent practice after an idea has been introduced. It does not replace direct teaching, mathematical or scientific discussion, or an adult checking whether the learner can explain the idea away from the screen.

For parents and carers

Word Reader provides guided reading-for-meaning practice using 32 selected words from the DfE Year 1 common-exception examples, through supplied clues, sentence completion and meaning selection. It supports the reading component of topic 2240 without assessing independent oral reading, pronunciation, fluency, spelling production, handwriting, dictation, the full range of common-exception words or complete topic mastery. Topics 2241 and 3205 remain outside its claim. Stop while attention is still good. A short accurate return tomorrow is more useful than extending a tired session today.
