Choose the type of practice your child needs before choosing a book. A topic workbook can organise practice across several areas. An arithmetic book focuses on calculations. Practice papers help you explore a test-style set of questions. You do not need to buy all three.

Start with school materials and the free official papers below. If they meet your child's needs, you do not need to buy a book. This research-based comparison uses publisher descriptions, ISBNs and the sample pages we inspected on 9 October 2026. We have not tested the books with children or reviewed every page. The previews did not show the answer sections, so we cannot compare the depth of their worked explanations.

Try the free options first

The Standards and Testing Agency publishes the 2026 KS2 maths papers and mark schemes. These include an arithmetic paper and two reasoning papers. They are a useful way to see the question formats without purchasing a practice-paper pack. Printing has its own cost.

Ask school which areas would benefit from practice and whether another workbook would duplicate material your child already has. You can also ask your library whether it stocks suitable maths revision books. Availability varies. Do not write in a borrowed workbook.

Our free Year 6 SATs revision guide helps you organise existing resources. This page has a narrower job: deciding whether a paid book adds something useful.

Match the book to the next learning task

Choose a format before choosing a title
What you want to doConsiderCheck before buying
Practise several topics in manageable sectionsA general maths workbookTopics, difficulty steps, and whether answers show the working
Work specifically on calculationsAn arithmetic question bookWhether reasoning is included and whether answers show worked steps
Try a test-style sequence across arithmetic and reasoningA practice-paper packNumber of complete sets and marking guidance
Understand a method that is still confusingAn explanation or help with that method firstMore questions alone may not explain it

If your child can calculate an answer but struggles to interpret a word problem, an arithmetic-only book may miss the issue. If the method itself is unclear, look for a worked explanation first. An answer key is not enough evidence that a book teaches the method: inspect an actual explanation page.

Collins workbook: practice across several topics

In the Collins workbook preview, ISBN 9780008112783, the contents on pages 2–3 cover topics across number, measurement, geometry, statistics, ratio and algebra. The rounding and Roman-numeral spread on pages 8–9 and mental-calculation spread on pages 10–11 use three challenge levels. Pages 76–77 show a progress test.

This is a topic-practice format to consider when you want to choose a particular area and starting level. The contents list pull-out answers, but those pages were not in the preview. Check them before relying on the book for step-by-step teaching.

Our pick when you want one book for dipping into different maths topics. Choose a starting level from the work your child can already do. Reader comments include home-learning and tuition use, but do not assume every younger KS2 child will be ready for every question.

CGP arithmetic: focused calculation practice

The CGP publisher page and Take a Look preview identify the arithmetic book as ISBN 9781789086140. Its contents group whole numbers, calculations, decimals and fractions. The seven interior sample pages, pages 2–8, show arithmetic exercises, including number-line support for negative numbers and order-of-operations questions.

This is a calculation-practice option, not a replacement for reasoning papers. The sampled order-of-operations pages contain exercises without a worked method on those pages. CGP says answers and mark schemes are included, but the answer section was not shown. Consider it when the method is understood and calculations need practice. Check further explanation pages if that is the support you need.

Our pick when the next job is practising calculations rather than tackling reasoning papers. The reader comments we checked also describe practice and revision use. If your child still needs the method explained, start with an explanation before adding more questions.

Collins practice papers: a ready-printed test-style set

The Collins practice-papers preview, ISBN 9780008384517, lists two sets, each with one arithmetic paper and two reasoning papers. The sample arithmetic and reasoning spreads include spaces for working. Some reasoning questions ask pupils to show their method. The preview's marking instructions are not examples of worked answers.

Consider this format for additional test-style practice or a ready-printed pack. It is not evidence of how thoroughly the unseen answer pages explain a solution. If the free official papers already meet your needs, there is no need to buy it.

Our pick when you want an additional printed set of arithmetic and reasoning papers. Start with the free official papers if you have not used them yet. The accessible written reader feedback for this pack was too limited to add much to the sample evidence.

What the samples let us compare

These observations describe the available samples, not the quality of every page or results with children. We have not scored or ranked the books. Use the evidence to choose a format, then inspect the support that matters for your child.

We also read a small selection of retailer customer reviews on 10 October 2026 to check who found the books useful. Reader experiences helped us judge fit; they are not proof of better scores or a change to the edition. Our recommendations combine that feedback with the publisher samples above.

Check the ISBN, year label and final price

All three listings were checked on 9 October 2026 and were marketed for the 2027 tests. The recorded publication dates are older: 2015 for the Collins workbook, 2020 for CGP arithmetic and 2019 for Collins practice papers. A new year in a listing title is not proof of a newly revised edition. Match the ISBN as well as the title.

We have left changing shop prices out of the comparison. Check the retailer’s current price, delivery charge, availability and returns information before you order. The lowest displayed book price may not give you the lowest delivered cost.

For this comparison, scope and format matter more than a claim that one book is universally best. No purchase is necessary to use TheLearnDen’s learning resources.

Keep a comparison checklist

Use these questions for any maths book, including a title suggested by school or found in a library. Print this guide or copy the checklist onto paper. You do not need to enter or send us any information.

Title and exact ISBN: Book and ISBN

Next task: Method explanation, topic practice, arithmetic or paper familiarity

Evidence in the sample: Page number and what it shows

Answer support: Worked steps seen, final answers only, or not shown

What I already have: School material, existing book or free official paper

Delivered cost, if buying: Book price plus delivery

My decision and reason: Use what I have, inspect further, borrow or buy

For example, if your next task is understanding a method but the preview shows only questions and a contents entry for answers, record 'explanation not shown'. Look for a worked-example page or ask school about explanation support before buying. A contents entry alone cannot settle that choice.

Choose one suitable resource first, then review whether it helps with the task you named. This guide concerns Year 6 maths SATs in England. For current test arrangements, see the official information for parents.
