English in Year 5

Children read and discuss a wider range of fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction and reference texts. They retrieve information, summarise, infer with evidence, predict, compare themes and conventions, distinguish fact from opinion, and discuss how language contributes to meaning.

In writing, children identify purpose and audience, develop setting, atmosphere and character, organise ideas across paragraphs, use relative clauses and modal verbs, add parenthesis with brackets, dashes or commas, clarify meaning with punctuation, and evaluate, edit and proofread their work.

Why fractions matter so much in Year 5

Year 5 connects fractions to division, decimals and percentages. Children compare and order related denominators, identify equivalent fractions, move between mixed and improper forms, add and subtract fractions with the same denominator or denominators that are multiples of the same number, and multiply fractions by whole numbers.

If a fraction method feels mysterious, return to a visual model or number line and ask what one whole represents. Secure equivalence and multiplication facts make later Year 6 work with different denominators, ratio and percentages more understandable.

Use equivalent fractions, converting fractions and adding and subtracting fractions as separate steps rather than trying to repair every fraction skill at once.

How to help at home without taking over

Ask your child to identify the first step they understand, then offer the smallest useful prompt. Year 5 work often becomes difficult because several earlier ideas must be coordinated, not because the whole topic is missing.

  • Keep multiplication and division facts active because they support factors, formal calculation, fractions and percentages.
  • For reading, ask which evidence supports an inference and how a particular word changes the effect.
  • For writing, discuss purpose and audience before correcting individual sentences.
