TheLearnDen Research Lab, product 4. Twelve exam centres that take private (home-educated) candidates for GCSE/IGCSE, transcribed from each centre's own published price page. This is not a census — see Method and Limitations.
Headline
- Cheapest published on-time fee for a standard GCSE subject: £200 (Excel Exam Centres, London). Dearest: £350 (WINA UK, OCR board, 3-paper subject). Most centres that quote a flat "standard subject" price sit in a £200–£290 band; WINA is the outlier because it prices by board and by paper count rather than one flat fee.
- Maths ranges £225 (Excel) to £325 (WINA, OCR board). English Language ranges £225 (three centres) to £325 (WINA, OCR board). Where a centre prices Maths/English above its standard-subject fee, the premium is real and consistent across the set — Maths and English cost more everywhere they're itemised separately.
- Late-entry surcharges: three centres publish an unambiguous per-subject figure — Excel £60, Tutors & Exams ~£115, Excel's second tier £120 — median £115. Two more centres publish numbers that don't cleanly fit this comparison: David Game lists three late fees (£425/£565/ £500) without saying which is "late" vs "very-late"; Nottingham College's £100 is per exam paper, not per subject. Including all seven pushes the median to £120, but that number is skewed by David Game's unclear figures — £115 is the more trustworthy headline.
- 8 of 12 centres (67%) publish at least one usable full exam fee. Wessex publishes only a £35 initial payment towards fees, not the full fee. The other three without a usable full fee are 3A Tutors, Enter CIC (both explicitly enquiry-only) and Learning Hive (publishes a number but qualifies it "tbc based on subject", so it isn't a firm price).
- Only 1 of 12 centres (WINA) prices by exam board. Other centres with usable full fees do not differentiate them by board. Wessex lists AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and EDUQAS but does not publish its full fee.
My recommendation: lead the published page with the £200–£350 standard-subject range and the £115 median late surcharge, and be explicit that WINA is the only centre where the board you sit actually changes the price. Don't quote the £120 all-in late-surcharge median — the David Game ambiguity makes it look more precise than the underlying data supports.
Fee table by subject group (on-time, GBP)
| Centre | Standard subject | Maths | English Language | Combined/Double Science | MFL |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tutors & Exams | 261.60 | 316.10 | 305.20 | 523.20 | 414.20 |
| Exam Centre Birmingham | 225 (from) | 240 | 225 | 475 | — |
| David Game College | 290 | — | — | 430 | 380 (with speaking) |
| Excel Exam Centres | 200 | 225 | 225 | 375 | 300 |
| English and Maths / GCSE Exam Centre | — | 240 | 225 | 475 | 350 |
| Intuition Exam Centres | 230 | — | — | 400 (sciences) | — |
| Wessex Tutors | full fee not published; £35 initial payment towards full fees | — | — | — | — |
| Nottingham College | 120/paper (≈240–360 for a 2–3 paper GCSE) | — | — | — | — |
| WINA UK — AQA / Edexcel / OCR | 250 / 275 / 300 (2-paper); 295 / 325 / 350 (3-paper) | 285 / 300 / 325 | 285 / 300 / 325 | 500 / 525 / 550 | — |
| Learning Hive | £200 (page itself calls this "tbc") | — | — | — | — |
| 3A Tutors Ltd | not published | — | — | — | — |
| Enter CIC | not published | — | — | — | — |
Dashes mean the centre's page doesn't itemise that category; it doesn't mean the price is £0. WINA's Maths and English are priced together as one "Maths or English" line, not split.

Coverage gaps
- Board-specific pricing is almost absent. Only WINA publishes different prices by exam board (AQA/Pearson Edexcel/OCR). Wessex lists AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and EDUQAS but does not publish its full fee. Other centres with a usable published fee do not differentiate it by board.
- CAIE (Cambridge International) and Eduqas/WJEC are barely served. Only Tutors & Exams prices CAIE and Eduqas, and at a flat (non-board-specific) rate. Nottingham College explicitly excludes CAIE. No centre in this set publishes a CAIE- or Eduqas-specific price. CCEA is not mentioned by any centre.
- Combined/double science pricing is inconsistent in kind, not just amount — some centres (Tutors & Exams) gate it behind "practicals carried forward" rather than pricing a full practical route; WINA and Excel price it as a standalone entry.
- 3A Tutors and Enter CIC publish nothing beyond "enquiry only" — no fee, no board list, no deadline.
- Learning Hive publishes a number it doesn't stand behind. Its own fee table marks the £200 GCSE figure "(tbc based on subject)", so it's excluded from every headline number in this report even though a figure is visibly printed on the page.
Method
Transcription only. Every fee in fees-2026-08.json and fee-index.csv is copied from the research markdown in data/research/gcse-cost-calculator-2026-08/ (fee-scoping-2026-08-21.md, fifth-group-candidates-2026-08-22.md, learning-hive-fees-2026-08-22.md), which itself quotes each centre's own published page, fetched on the dates recorded in each row's sourceDate. No centre was contacted. Fees are as published on those dates and may have changed since — several source pages are already labelled "Summer 2027" pricing published ahead of the academic year, and one (Intuition) self-declares stale 2024–25 rates.
Every fee carries the sentence it was taken from. Each row in the JSON and CSV has an evidenceQuote field — a verbatim excerpt (under 120 characters) from the source markdown that contains that exact number. Nothing in this dataset was estimated, midpointed, or inferred from a range. Wessex's £35 row is explicitly labelled as an initial payment rather than a full exam fee. Where another source gave only a range (for example Intuition's "£215–400" IGCSE line) or an unqualified/qualified number in conflict (Learning Hive), the fee is recorded as null with a caveat field explaining why, rather than picked.
Limitations
- This is 12 centres, not a census. The set was chosen because these are the centres that publish fees openly and turned up during two research passes (21–22 Aug 2026); it is not every UK exam centre that accepts private candidates, and it is not weighted by size or volume of candidates.
- Two centres may share ownership. English and Maths / GCSE Exam Centre is flagged in the source research as "near-identical" in pricing to Exam Centre Birmingham and "likely related operators" — both are counted here, but treat their agreement as one data point, not two independent confirmations.
- Pricing years don't line up. Some pages quote Summer 2027 pricing, others Summer 2026 or undated; a few (Tutors & Exams, Nottingham) will refresh for 2026/27 in September and should be re-scraped then.
- No centre confirms whether these are all-in prices. Most centres bundle registration/invigilation/admin into the headline fee, but this wasn't independently verified for every centre — only stated where the source explicitly says so (Tutors & Exams: "no separate admin fee").
Licence and reuse

Correction policy
If a fee, source quotation or classification is wrong or has changed, use the corrections route and include the centre name and source URL. We will preserve the dated evidence while correcting the current report and dataset together.
Next step
Recommendation: commission a proper census from the JCQ or exam-board private-candidate centre lists, rather than adding more centres one at a time by search. AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas each publish a "find a private candidate centre" search tool; a systematic pull from those (centre name + postcode + boards offered) would give a denominator this 12-centre set doesn't have, and would let a future pass report genuine coverage percentages instead of "12 centres we found."
