Understand the key idea

A simple food chain shows how food and energy pass from one living thing to another. It usually starts with a producer such as a green plant, followed by one or more consumers.

Common mix-up

The arrow points from the food to the organism that eats it, showing the direction in which energy moves.

  1. Start with a plant or another producer.
  2. Add the animal that eats the producer.
  3. Continue the chain and label producer, consumer, predator and prey where appropriate.
