Understand the key idea
BODMAS gives a reliable order for multi-step calculations: brackets, orders, division and multiplication, then addition and subtraction. Division and multiplication share a priority, as do addition and subtraction, so work from left to right within each pair.
Common mix-up
Multiplication does not always come before division. When both appear at the same level, calculate from left to right.
Try this first
- Complete anything inside brackets.
- Calculate powers or other orders.
- Work through division and multiplication from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right.
