Exam Style Questions: Bodmas Skills

Year 6 learners practise bodmas practice questions.

The activities include Understand and Apply BODMAS Skills. The checked support below includes video, worksheet, lesson. Open a resource in its provider's website and choose the format that best helps the learner explain the idea independently.

Understand the key idea

BODMAS gives a reliable order for multi-step calculations: brackets, orders, division and multiplication, then addition and subtraction. Division and multiplication share a priority, as do addition and subtraction, so work from left to right within each pair.

Common mix-up

Multiplication does not always come before division. When both appear at the same level, calculate from left to right.

Try this first

  1. Complete anything inside brackets.
  2. Calculate powers or other orders.
  3. Work through division and multiplication from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right.

Ask: Which operation has the highest priority in this expression, and why?
