Functions Of Parts Of Flowering Plants

Year 3 learners practise parts of a plant and their job.

The activities include Explore the Structure of a Plant, Find Out About the Parts of a Plant, Identify Parts of a Plant, and related practice. The checked support below includes teaching, worksheet, lesson, video. Open a resource in its provider's website and choose the format that best helps the learner explain the idea independently.

Understand the key idea

The main parts of a flowering plant have different jobs. Roots anchor the plant and absorb water and minerals, the stem supports the plant and carries materials, leaves make food using light, and flowers help the plant reproduce.

Common mix-up

Plants do not take ready-made food from soil. They make sugars in their leaves using light, water and carbon dioxide.

Try this first

  1. Label roots, stem, leaves and flower.
  2. Match each part to its main function.
  3. Explain what might happen if one part could not do its job.

Ask: How do the roots, stem and leaves work together?
