Taking GCSEs as a Private Candidate: 2027 Dates and Deadlines
For summer 2027 GCSEs, the common entry deadline is 21 February 2027. Your exam centre may need your details and payment earlier. Contact centres now to ask which subjects they accept, their own deadlines and the total fees.
Private candidates study independently and arrange an entry through an exam centre. This guide covers the 2027 dates and questions to ask. Use the JCQ private-candidate guidance alongside the rules for your chosen awarding body and specification.
The 2027 calendar for private candidates

Ask the centre to confirm the entry and check the statement of entry, including specification, tier and paper codes. Ask separately about any late-entry charges; registering interest alone is not confirmation that you have an exam place.
Finding a centre, and what to ask
Use the JCQ centre search to find possible centres, then confirm directly that they accept private candidates for your exact subject and specification.
- Ask for a written total and which services it includes, including any separate charge for post-results services.
- Ask for the centre’s registration and entry deadlines.
- Confirm the awarding body, specification and tier for each subject.
- Discuss any access arrangements when making the entry; ask what evidence and deadlines apply.
- Ask how the centre handles any coursework, spoken assessment or required practical work for the qualification before paying.

The 2028 series
If you are planning for 2028, contact centres about subject availability and preparation now, then use the board’s dates for the actual series. Entry, assessment and access-arrangement deadlines may differ; ask the centre to confirm them.

Does the exam series have an age restriction?
Ask the centre about the rules for your qualification and series. In particular, November GCSE English language and maths entries require candidates to be at least 16 on 31 August of that year. Do not assume an entry in one series makes you eligible for another.
