Use Expanded Noun Phrases
Year 2 learners practise expanded noun phrases with adjectives.
The activities include Select Suitable Adjectives. The checked support below includes video, worksheet, lesson. Open a resource in its provider's website and choose the format that best helps the learner explain the idea independently.
Understand the key idea
A noun phrase names a person, place, thing or idea. An expanded noun phrase adds useful detail around the noun, often with one or more precise adjectives, such as “the small, red kite”.
Common mix-up
A longer sentence is not automatically an expanded noun phrase. The added words must tell the reader more about the noun.
Try this first
- Find the noun.
- Choose one or two adjectives that add useful detail.
- Read the complete phrase aloud and check that it still makes sense.
Ask: Which words tell us more about the noun?
